Winterize Your Workout

by Megan

As much as we don’t want to admit it, winter is HERE! It’s that time of year where we are tempted to snuggle up on our couches, indulge in our favorite comfort foods, and wait for the warm weather to strike our motivation. So what do you do with these shorter daylight hours to help avoid the WINTER 15?

Motivation to exercise can be hard to find during the ensuing cold months. However, the snow provides a fabulous canvas for some fun ways to exercise without having to dust off that treadmill in your basement. Here are some great ideas for indoor and outdoor winter workouts!

  1. Cross Country Skiing
  2. Snow Shoeing
  3. Ice Hockey/Pond Hockey
  4. Ice Skating
  5. Snow Boarding/Skiing
  6. Shoveling Snow
  7. Curling
  8. Walking/Running Outdoors
  9.  Wii Fit
  10. Dancing/Zumba
  11. Mall Walking
  12. Exercise DVDs
  13. Swimming/Water Aerobics

There are so many things to do inside AND outside during the winter – especially around Eau Claire where there are great trails and facilities where you can rent outdoor equipment so you don’t have to buy your own. I personally found a new love for running in the winter after getting a pair of shoe grippers from my mom last Christmas. They make running safer for me so I don’t have to worry about slipping on the ice!

What are some of your favorite winter exercise activities? Have you found creative ways to avoid the snowy exercise slump?

Check out Amazon for the shoe grippers and here are a few local sites for equipment rental: UWEC; River Side Bike & Skate; eauclairewi.gov.
