Summer Pests

by Megan

With the warm weather finally upon us, I’ve been enjoying the great outdoors almost every night.  The only complaint I have so far, is the pesky insects!  I know I shouldn’t be complaining – at least it’s not snowing, but they are suddenly coming out of the wood work!  Japanese Beetles, Box Elders, Stink Bugs and Ticks – YUCK!  In no time, the flies, mosquitoes, ants and bees will join the bug battalion - what a nuisance!  To help prevent and protect you, your family, and friends (especially you avid outdoors enthusiasts), follow the tips below:

·         Wear a light-colored long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat.

·         Secure your clothes by tucking your pants into your socks or shoes.

·         Avoid underbrush and tall grass when hiking.

·         Don't wear perfume or scented lotions.

·         Control odors especially around your garbage cans.

·         Cover food and beverages.

·         Avoid or remove any stagnant water which is a breeding ground for some insects.

·         Use an insect repellent and follow the directions for use. There are also organic repellents to suit all preferences!

·         Use an insecticide or fertilizer that kills and repels a radius of your home and lawn - you can call a pest control service or use the commercial products available if you’re the ‘do-it-yourself’ type.  Again, there are organic solutions you can purchase as well.

·         After being outdoors for a long period, inspect yourself for ticks.  If you can, have someone help you check the areas you can’t see like your head and your back.

·         If you have pets that go outdoors, use a repellent made for that type of pet and apply according to the label.  Be sure to check your pets for ticks often!

When using the repellents and chemical treatments to try to ward off the insects, be aware of the cautions and follow the direction carefully because some of these can be hazardous to humans and animals’ health.

These are only a few helpful hints for protecting yourself from these pests. Seems like I am always trying something; anything to feel more comfortable against these summer irritants! What methods do you use in combating bugs during this pesky time?  I’d love to hear some good buzz!
