Sensational Seafood!

by Megan

How often do you eat fish or other seafood?By now most of us have heard that seafood is a healthy choice but many people still don’t incorporate enough into their diet. The United States Department of Agriculture states that eating it twice a week can help prevent heart disease. Here are some of their practical tips for making sure to get enough:

-          Keep it handy. Canned seafood like salmon, tuna, or sardines are quick and easy to prepare.

-          Put it on a salad or sandwich. Use grilled shrimp, crab, or scallops to top your salad. Canned seafood makes for great sandwiches.

-          Get creative. Try things like salmon patties, shrimp stir fry, or grilled fish tacos.

Check out this handout from the 10 Tips Nutrition Education Series at ChooseMyPlate.gov. It has more seafood tips related to cooking safety, keeping it lean, and shopping smart!

Concerned about mercury? Check out this previous blog of mine on Fish and Mercury to get the facts.

Here’s an idea that may help you. Post the 10-tips handout on your fridge and remember to look at it when making your grocery list! Dislike fish? Try Tilapia or a similar milder fish. You could add a light bread coating to help disguise the fishy taste. Do you have a favorite seafood dish? If so, please share!
