Simple Ways to Be More Proactive with Your Time

by The Cooperative
Time – it’s something that we never have enough of and wish we had more of. But how do we make the most of it? Being proactive, by definition, means “to act in anticipation of future problems, needs, or changes rather than waiting until a problem occurs.”  Rather than being reactive or waiting until a deadline is near, being proactive with how we use our time can help us complete our tasks quicker and allow more time in our day for things like physical activity, sleep, preparing nutritious meals, social time, and self-care.
Here are a few simple ways to make the most of your time:
  • Look at the Week Ahead – organize your tasks for the upcoming week by what day you want to complete them. This can make your task list seem less overwhelming throughout the week.
  • Have Go-To Snacks – Stay stocked up on some healthy go-to snacks to save yourself the guesswork when you are short on time later. These could include fruits, vegetables, low-fat Greek yogurt, string cheese, or cottage cheese, whole grain crackers or chips, popcorn, rice cakes with nut butter, tuna or chicken, or low-sodium lunch meat.
  • Time-Blocking – Block time for certain tasks so there is time set aside to complete it. For example, if you plan to go for a 15-minute walk every day, add that time block to your schedule, similar to how you would schedule a meeting or appointment.
  • One Task at a Time – Multitasking can actually hinder your progress of getting tasks completed. Aim to focus on one item at a time, completing the most urgent task first.
  • Identify Time Wasters – Time wasters can include extra screen time, multitasking, perfectionism, poor planning, and indecisiveness.
  • Don’t Procrastinate – Don’t put off an unexciting or difficult task for later. Try completing the task sooner to give yourself enough time to complete it efficiently and avoid the stress of an impending deadline.
What simple tips do you use in your day-to-day that help you make the most of your time? Give a few of these tips a try!
