Ringing in the New Year with Reflection

by Joanna

As the new year bursts through the door, it’s a great time to reflect on what we were thankful for over the last 12 months and our hopes and vision for the coming year.   Here is what the coaches had to say:

Coach Sarah:  What were you most thankful for in 2018?

This last year I was most thankful for the support of my family and friends. I have received encouragement during good times, and was able to lean on others in times of need. It has been nice to know that there are so many people in my life that truly care about me and vice versa. A strong support system has truly made a difference in my life and for that, I am thankful.

Coach MeganWhat is the biggest lesson you learned in 2018?

Be flexible. That’s my biggest lesson from this past year- being flexible to fit in as much exercise as my schedule will allow (or what my kids will allow), whether that is 45 minutes or 15, any amount makes me feel better than none. Also, literally becoming more flexible with yoga. I was able to get attend a few actual classes for an hour of “Om” but I also used YouTube and did many a video on my phone while Bob the Builder entertained the masses.

Coach KaylaLooking back on 2018, what was the best thing that happened in your life?

Looking back on the year of 2018, there were a lot of positive things worth mentioning. However, one topic sticks out the most. This year marked the year of transformation of my family’s health, and I couldn’t be more proud, happy, excited, elated, and insert all the rest of the positive feelings here. To name a few of the highlights, my mom started really working on creating a work-life balance for her extremely time demanding job, my sister started regularly exercising and focusing on improving her nutrition, and my cousin lost over 120 pounds by focusing on eating healthy and moving more! So, while it seems like these things didn’t directly happen to me, in the long run it does affect me because I get to spend more quality time with the people I love the most.

Coach MelissaWhat are your wellness goals for 2019?

My wellness goals for 2019 are all about balance.  Finding a balance between cardiovascular fitness, strength training and stretching is going to be hard for me since I love running and find that I really have to push myself to strength train and take the time to stretch.  All three of these areas are so important for overall fitness, and I find that if I am lacking in one area, I tend to progress less in other areas. In order to accomplish this goal, I will write down my workouts on a calendar and check them off just like any other appointment or meeting that I have.

As for myself, what am I looking forward to most in 2019?

The new year feels like a new beginning.  Time to reset, recharge, and maybe try something new.  Every week during the hockey season, I try to work on something new or practice something that I struggle with. If you practice the areas in which you excel but neglect those that you actually need work on, you’re not doing yourself any favors! If you can practice what you’re bad at, and ask for help when needed, you might not be bad at it any longer!

If you were asked any of the questions above, how would you answer?  Try either asking yourself these questions or asking a family member about themselves. It’s a great way to be a little introspective and reflective.  It can also help you to stay on track and not let the years fly by while standing still. Feel free to share your answers in the comments!
