Pumpkin: Good, Bad & Sometimes Ugly

by Megan

If you’re like me you enjoy just about anything pumpkin flavored this time of year. We even have several pumpkin recipes in our blog that may suit your fancy. As nutritious as pumpkin is, not all pumpkin inspired treats are good for you and your waistline. This article highlights some of the unhealthiest autumn treats. Among them are a few I have definitely eaten:

  • Cheesecake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake - ok, ok, the name alone doesn’t exactly scream “healthy”, but I still have enjoyed a slice or two. Should you choose to order a slice, my advice is to split it with 3 to 4 people.
  • Starbucks Pumpkin Scone - I used to work at Starbucks during college and ate my fair share of scones. It should have been no surprise that I also put on a few pounds that year! Stick with their coffee and make your own breakfast to save calories and fat.
  • Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte - this beverage has quite the following. I know several people who refer to the day Starbucks releases this drink as their official start of fall. If you must indulge, do so but make it a treat - after all, a grande size has 50 grams of sugar in it!

Among the better pumpkin flavored treats on the list?

  • Thomas Pumpkin Spice Bagel Thins - I haven’t noticed these in stores yet but I will start looking now. I’m a big fan of their bagel thins in general, so I will scoop these up if I see them.
  • Bigelow Pumpkin Spice Tea - here’s a warm beverage with zero calories, drink up! I haven’t tried this tea but I am a huge tea fan in general, so let me know if you’ve tried it.

Those are just a few of the treats in the article, I know there are probably a lot more pumpkin flavored recipes and products that I haven’t tried yet - so feel free to leave suggestions! And no, Reeses’ Peanut Butter cups in the shape of a pumpkin do not qualify for this!
