Homemade Dog Treats

by Joanna
We always think of ourselves or family members when we think about healthy food, but do you think of the “other” family member, the kind with four legs? Otherwise known as Man’s Best Friend. If you buy your precious pooch a copious amount of treats, do you ever stop to look at the ingredients like you would with your own food?

I’m sure you’ve probably heard the reports of spoiled or bad ingredients in dog foods recently that have made dogs sick or even die. I’ll spare you the sad and scary details on my post, but you can read about it here.

So, what I did this month was make my own dog treats! That way I knew exactly what was going into the treats that my little Molly was eating (she’s a snuggly, 7 1/2 year old half Shih-tzu, half Poodle). They are very easy, just a little time consuming. And what dog doesn’t love peanut butter??

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Additional flour for rolling.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. Combine dry ingredients.
  3. Mix in peanut butter and hot water. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time.
  4. Knead the dough well, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Roll out the dough into 1/4" thickness and cut into shapes with bone shaped cookie cutters.
  6. Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 40 minutes. Cool them completely on a wire rack before serving.

Store in a sealed air tight container at room temperature for one week, in the refrigerator for 3 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

I also have made these treats for family members at Christmas from Santa Paws. Give it a try!If your dog likes them, send me a link to a photo with your dog and the treats and we’ll post if on our blog!
