Healthier Gyros

by Megan

My husband LOVES gyros. Seriously, even if he’s just eaten a full meal if he finds a gyro stand he will order one and eat the whole thing. He just had one at an art festival we were at last weekend, and the week before that had one at Eau Claire’s Water St. Deli (delicious!). However, for whatever reason I just can’t get into the lamb meat, I just can’t do it. However, I found a recipe that uses ground turkey that I think will go over fairly well with my family!

Healthy Greek Gyro Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. ground turkey
  • 10 oz. frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed
  • 2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp. coriander
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • 2 pinches cinnamon
  • ½ cup feta cheese

Directions:

Mix above ingredients together and shape into a loaf. Bake at 425 F for 25-30 minutes, or until thermometer and cook until the center is 165 F.

Tzatziki sauce ingredients:

  • 1 Cup plain greek yogurt
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 clove garlic
  • ¾ tsp. cumin
  • ¼ cucumber, peeled and grated

Mix all these ingredients for your sauce. When the meat is done slice it up and put in a warmed up pita pocket and add a drizzle of the sauce. Enjoy!
