Eating at Work: How the Extra Calories Can Add Up

by Sarah

Visiting a company break room or common area can be the ultimate test for anyone watching their nutrition. Treats, sweets, and everything in between can be found lurking in these spaces. Items brought in by others and even vending machines can be very tempting, especially when stressed or tired at work. So how many extra calories may we be consuming from these break room offerings?

The CDC recently completed a study about what we eat at work. They followed more than 5,000 employees across the country to see how much food (which was typically free) was consumed at work. The study concluded to find that the average weekly calories totaled nearly 1,300! That is a lot of extra calories!

So if you are like me and free food tests your willpower, here are a few ways to combat it!

  • Bring healthy snacks from home, and ACTUALLY eat them instead! Yes, we all have the best intentions to eat our own snacks, but sticking to your nutritional plan will feel better in the end.
  • Avoid spaces where free food or tempting food is offered. This may be impossible at times, but think outside the box! Maybe it is a bright, sunny day. Find a shady spot outside to take a break instead. Changing our environment will help us change our actions!
  • Go for a walk during your break. This can be another way to avoid the temptations.
  • Don’t let others influence your decision if you do not want unhealthy items. They may not have the same goals that you do. After all, you are the one in control!
  • Set a good example by bringing a healthy snack to share. This may get others rethinking the items they bring in and whether it is a healthy option or not.
  • Limit your portions. It is ok to have a treat every once in a while, but staying mindful of portions is important.
