Coach Megan's Winter Wonders

by Megan

I realize it’s 20 degrees out and snow is on the ground but I’m still excited for spring. The days are getting longer and before we know it, we’ll be splashing through puddles instead of silently cursing the icy patches. Before long we’ll see green grass and blooming flowers! But until then, here are some things I've been doing to try to enjoy the last few weeks of winter.

Getting outside

Eau Claire Parks and Rec put on a “Reindeer” scavenger hunt last month which had us visiting 9 parks in the area and it was fantastic. Some parks we knew about, but many were new to us. It was great to get the kids outside and we all got to get some energy out. I encourage you to look for local skating rinks, hiking trails and sledding hills in your area for a change of scenery.

10-Spice Vegetable Soup

As far as cooking goes, every weekend for the past 3 weeks I have been making a batch of this 10-spice Vegetable Soup.

Sometimes the vegetables and beans I use are different from the recipe just due to what I have around, but it’s the spices that make this soup so delicious.

Something to note: new dietary guidelines are out on MyPlate.gov, if you’re curious about what to eat more or less of, visit their website. They also have some great recipes if you’re looking for something new.

Breathing Exercises

And finally, if life has been stressful try some breathing exercises. No, they won’t “solve” the stress but it can calm you down so you can focus on what’s in front of you.

Stay warm, stay healthy and remember that spring will be here before we know it!
