Coach Megan's July Roundup

by Megan
Wow! July is upon us!

I feel like March lasted forever and now we’re already in the thick of summer. And in the Midwest, it has definitely felt like the thick of summer, I think today is expected to be a cool 93 degrees. Here are a few things I've been working on through this heat wave.

Staying Cool

Because I expected this week to be hot, I went ahead and ordered a splash pad for my kids and it was a hit, we are using it most evenings after work/school. I have been trying hard to only buy things from local stores but I went ahead and ordered that off Amazon as I couldn’t find one around here, all the smart people must have bought them before it got so hot!

Staying Active

When I wake up in the morning I have been running or walking as it’s the only time in the day I can stand to be outside. I spray on some sunscreen, grab by shoes and head out just as the sun is coming up.

Staying Entertained

My sister in law recommended a new podcast that has made my runs go by fast- Missing in Alaska. It’s about two congressmen that went missing in 1972 and it’s gripping. If you’re looking for something to listen to as you exercise, drive or clean this is great.

Staying Engaged

If you have kids old enough to read on their own, here is an article with some recommendations to keep them reading for the summer months.

Staying Hydrated

Finally, please remember to be drinking plenty of water. The temps are very high and so is the humidity. Kids and adults who are outside for extended periods of time need to make a conscious effort to stay on top of their water consumption. Dark colored urine, fatigue, headaches and confusion are all signs you need to be drinking more water.

Enjoy the outdoors and stay hydrated!
