Mom was Right!

I had oatmeal this morning for breakfast.  Raisin and walnut oatmeal, to be exact.  I used to eat it all the time but haven’t had it for awhile.  It was outstanding.  I might try to have it again tomorrow morning, but regardless, I’ll eat some sort of breakfast.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, my mom would always say.  And of course, once again, she’s right!

Eating breakfast has more benefits than you may think.  Research has shown that it may reduce obesity, diabetes and heart disease, to name a few.  Eating breakfast also improves concentration, mental performance, problem solving ability, mood and memory.  Co-workers or classmates who eat breakfast will have an advantage, on average, over those who skip breakfast!

The American Heart Association recommends a bowl of whole-grain cereal.  Studies have found that whole grain cereals improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels and are a good source of soluble fiber.  Soluble fiber forms a gel-like material that prevents cholesterol and saturated fats from entering the bloodstream, preventing them from collecting and forming plaque on the artery walls.  That’s a good thing.

And there are no excuses!  I don’t want to hear that you are too busy to eat breakfast!  I suggest bringing a resealable bag to work or school filled with whole grain crackers, low-fat granola bars or fruit.

What are other take-a-long items do you suggest?  I’m always looking for suggestions on good, quick snacks.  I have a recipe for granola bits that I’ll have to share soon.  I just made it for the first time the other day and it was good – and easy!
