Do you find yourself having bad days and it just seems like everything that comes out of your mouth is negative? I’ve had those days; they mostly seem to be on Mondays. When I’m in those ruts, I have to remind myself to be positive. Here are a few steps to take to try to have more positive days:
1. Smile. This is an old trick that believe it or not, works. It’s almost a “fake-it-till-you-make-it” technique. By turning that frown upside down, you can internally change the way you feel and how others feel about you. Even if you don’t think you have anything to smile about, try it anyway and when people smile back, most likely your smile will become genuine.
2. Have gratitude. There is so much in the world to feel heavy about. But there is also so much to be thankful for! Try writing down three things you are grateful for over the next 10 days. Keep a journal by your bed, take a picture of what you are grateful for and keep it for yourself or share it on social media.
3. Surround yourself with positive people. Check your surroundings. If you’re circle of people are always downers and pulling you into their black hole, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate who you spend time with. Choose to be around those that are uplifting.
4. Breathe. Sometimes when we are angry, our breathing becomes short and quick, and we can get ourselves worked up. Here is a breathing technique to try:
Take slow deep breathes from your diaphragm to help relax your mind and body and get blood circulating.
o Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts
o Hold for 4 counts
o Breathe out through your mouth on a count of 4
o Repeat 3 more times
What do you do to help be more positive?
